Jane Wyman had labored for years as a bit player to B-actress to second lead to actress in a series of frothy musicals and comedies distinguishable only by their slightly funny situations and occasionally entertaining dialogue and Wyman's ever-changing hair color. By the time she found her dramatic footing by the mid-forties, beginning with her critically acclaimed performance as Ray Milland's faithful girlfriend in The Lost Weekend (1945, Paramount Pictures), her sensitive but strong portrayal of Orry Baxter in The Yearling (1946, MGM), and her Academy Award winning role in Johnny Belinda (1948, Warner Brothers), now with her new gained reputation as a strong performing actress she could pick and choose the parts and the films that she selected to do. Never a conventional beauty by Hollywood standards, her ability to convey characters with a quiet demeanor and a spirited moral compass made her an ideal choice to play Selina DeJong in So Big. When her father dies and his creditors come to dismantle his home including the John Singer Sargent portrait of him we seen Wyman's ability to convey a soft reflection as she remembers that her father encouraged her to treasure life’s experiences, especially when you accomplish something on your own, was magnificently done. Even that curmudgeon critic Bosley Crowther wrote in The New York Times that Wyman, "whose acting in subservient roles has become a virtual standard on the screen, she is remarkably strong and effective in every forthright little bit she does, here." Wyman, after working so long and so hard to become a full-fledged star, tried to balance her unpretentious roles with those that allowed her to show off her glamorous and comedic side as well, in Frank Capra's Here Comes The Groom (1951, Paramount Pictures), in the film Wyman gets to demonstrate her flair for physical comedy by having a knock-down-drag-out-fight with costar Alexis Smith, who's also in love with her fiancee Bing Crosby. One of Wyman's more glamorous roles was in the film Lucy Gallant, (1955, Paramount Pictures), in the film Wyman plays a character like herself strong and independent who heads her own department store in Texas. Designer Edith Head designed a very chic wardrobe for Wyman in the film. Edith Head even appears in the film as a guest speaker when she narrates a fashion show. What's intriguing about Lucy Gallant is that for the time period when the film was made (mid-1950s), a woman was portrayed as virtually building her own business from the ground up without any real help from the man (or men) in her life. Jane Wyman was an intelligent actress who always projected warmth to any role she played and as Lucy Gallant she does a marvelous job. In 1954 and in 1955 Jane Wyman worked with Douglas Sirk in two of Sirk's masterpieces first was Magnificent Obsession and the second All That Heaven Allows both costarring Rock Hudson. In Magnificent Obsession Jane Wyman portrays a woman (Helen Phillips) who knows what she wants, she follows her desires, and she never gives up or complains when extraordinarily dramatic things happen to her. Jane Wyman's portrayal shows her character's resiliency and intelligence when she goes blind and her life changes. The biggest credit Jane Wyman can receive is that she clearly understood Douglas Sirk’s direction and found a way to craft the character of Helen that works in perfect harmony with the film. Jane Wyman keeps her performance here very grounded – she is an actress who has the ability to appear free of any attempt to win the audience’s sympathy while doing exactly that at the same time. In Johnny Belinda, she managed to appear both strong and tender and found a way to avoid too much sentiment while somehow gaining the sentiment and sympathy of the audience. With her performance. Jane Wyman herself is the one who defines the style and sentiment of the story

In All That Heaven Allows Wyman plays a repressed widow who falls in love with her much younger gardener played by Rock Hudson. Wyman's acting is superb she never telegraphs “repressed” with flutters and stammers, as so many do when playing uptight ladies of the country club set. She holds everything in, reflecting a wide spectrum of emotions with the minutest expression. She’s fragile yet finds a strength in the way she withholds emotions from those too arrogant to notice her sinking despair. Wyman conveys her joys and fears beautifully, both the stabs of jealousy Cary suffers when she fears Ron desires another woman, as well as the feelings of excitement she has when experiencing another way of life for the first time especially when she's invited to dinner party given Hudson's friends Mick and Alida Anderson well played by Charles Drake and Virginia Grey. Perhaps the most telling moment in the film is when Cary has ended her relationship with Hudson so her children buy her a television set as a Christmas present. “All you have to do is turn that knob and you have all the company you want right there on the screen: drama, comedy, life’s parade at your fingertips,” says the deliveryman. The scene ends with Cary’s horrified face reflected in the set, as the loneliness of her future dawns on her you can see Wyman communicating her complete loathing to owning a television set as a form of company, we feel her despair that her son doesn’t care about the depth of her sacrifice. But at least the ending is a happy one now that Cary finally accepts her desires as legitimate and seeks them out. But she still has to leave her home, her friends, and possibly alienate her children in the process. Which makes the ending ring true. Every major decision we make in life, no matter how positive, comes with loss. Often the most important, meaningful, and life-affirming decisions mean leaving something valuable behind.
